Potential sail trainees are invited to a taster session being hosted by the Scottish Maritime Academy in Peterhead this month.
With the deadline for applications fast approaching, attendees at the free two-hour session will learn ropework skills, experience a Virtual Reality simulator as well as take the helm at the modern ship simulator - technology that gives an on-board perspective of navigating a range of vessels.
The Scottish Maritime Academy is a purpose-built training centre which is part of North East Scotland College and it’s offering up their expertise to promote the opportunity for young people to take part in the event.
The academy offers training across the Merchant Navy and fishing sectors and is an approved training provider for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Merchant Navy Training Board, Association of Marine Electronic and Radio Colleges, Royal Yacht Association and Seafish.
The Saturday morning session on 18 January is designed to let young people in the region between 15 and 25 years old find out a bit more about the skills they will learn at sea if they apply to be part of a Tall Ships crew.
The Tall Ships Races Aberdeen 2025 returns to the city for the first time in nearly 30 years from 19-22 July 2025. It is Europe’s largest free family event and is expected to draw 50 Tall Ships from across the globe as well as attract 400,000 visits to the city.
The world-renowned, sailing extravaganza is offering the adventure of a lifetime for young local people to be recruited as sail trainees. They will get the chance to sail aboard a Tall Ship from Dunkirk, France to Aberdeen, or from Aberdeen to Kristiansand, Norway.
Young people between 15 and 25 years old living in an AB postcode can apply to be part of a Tall Ship crew. Applications close at the end of this month (31 January), after which the selection and training process will begin.
No prior sailing experience is required and the opportunity is designed to be inclusive, diverse and accessible. There are at least 100 funded places available, as well as the option of self-funding.
